2007 Application of Satellite Images in Asia Pacific Region for the APEC

Absrtact
The goal of APEC SAKE (Satellite Application on Knowledge-based economy) is to assist member economies (ME) of APEC to develop new economy that is based on the knowledge of satellite application. In the mean time, we may build up a channel of science and technology exchange (STE), and enhance our image and influence in APEC which is one of the higher level of international organizations that we are participating. In the past few years, we have established good channel of communication with APEC ME through STE in OMISAR project that was jointly sponsored by APEC and EPA. In OMISAR project, we helped Viet Nam, Indonesia and the Philippines to build small satellite ground stations and in return, we received the satellite data of southern South China Sea. Base on the same mutually beneficial spirit, we provided our Fromosat-2 satellite images to the foreign participants, co-organized training workshops in HoChiMinh City of Vietnam, Jakarta of Indonesia and Bolinao of the Philippines to build up local capability in the analysis and interpretation of satellite images. These images will be used by local government to monitor their marine environment, and to balance the economic development with the conservation of marine resources. Their experience shall be useful on the conservation of our marine resources and to preserve the quality of our marine environment. With the help from Vietnamese and Indonesian participants, SAKE 2008 project will hold Steering Committee in Vietnam, Training Workshop and SAKE-3 Workshop in Indonesia
